ARCHEOLOGICAL PARK OF THE CASTLE LANDS

The communal administrations of Attimis, Faedis and Povoletto have been working on this for quite a few years: the creation of the “Parco Archeolgico delle Terre dei castelli” (Archeological Park of the Castle Lands), and initiatives aimed at the rediscovery and use of the castles spread on their territory. They intend to give a new impulse and development to culture and economy – especially touristic – in the area.

Cartina Parco Archeologico dei CastelliThe Archeological Park will be situated in that pedemontana area, which stretches itself between Cividale del Friuli and Tarcento, including the communes of Attimis, Faedis and Povoletto.

It must be said that the park itself is not characterized by territorial continuity of said municipalities, but by the fact that each of them has areas of a high historical value, inside which fortifications are situated.  It’s an “historical” continuity rather than a “physical” one, expressed by that ideal thread linking the castles and corrensponding to the Medieval theme.

When it comes to geographical localization, it must be said that most of the fortified sites are met on the ss. 356 and the s.s. 13, along the road linking Cividale del Friuli to Tarcento and Gemona del Friuli. Usually situated on hilltops ripe with vegetation and water streams, the castles may look either like simple sets of ruins or preserving their integrity, still sporting their grandeur.

Quite a few of them are available to the communal administrations and promoting instutions: they are the Park’s actual fulcrum:

  • the first one is on the way from Cividale to Faedis, situated on a promontory dominating the town. It’s the powerful Zucco Castle, dating back to the 13th Century , with the Domus and nearby small church, dedicated to the Rosary Virgin;
  • the following ones are met going up north, in the municipality of Attimis. There you can find Borgo Faris and the Partistagno Castle (12th-13th Century) with the Palatium, the Tower House, the Sant’Osvaldo small church and, after a few kilometers in the direction of the main village, the Superior (12th Century) and Inferior Castles (13th Century) of Attimis;
  • last, but not in terms of scientific relevance and meaning, the Motta Castle (VIIIth Century) is situated  on a hilltop in the fraction of Savorgnano del Torre, on a particularly beautiful road heading south towards Povoletto.

Besides its originality, the actual focus of this initiative lies in the development of medieval-themed historical and archeological tourism.

That’s why the Park was first of all conceived as a series of actual cultural poles. A series of services and structured are associated to each site, making its enjoyment more functional and complete.

Castello di PartistagnoIn the Partistagno castle complex, the project includes the opening of the “Nuovo Museo Archeologico Medievale” (New Medieval Archeological Museum), a wine bar to taste local quality products and a pottery shop; the wonderful Church entitled to San Lorenzo, a cycle of frescos from the XIIIth Century making it even more precious, will also be reopened to visits and devotion. The intervention will be completed shortly with equipment and safety measures, improvement of the access road and a new hiking trail.

Castello di ZuccoThe Zucco castle complex will see the realization of the Park’s scientific services and institutional structures (a workshop for the restoration of archaeological finds, a warehouse for finds, book and picture library, offices) and of a second, highly innovative exhibition space: the Historical Museum of Hunting, completely dedicated to this subject and its weaponry.

Intervention on the building complex will be completed by two artisan shops (a goldsmith’s and a mosaic maker’s) and the Medieval Hostel. After mandatory archeological inspection, the whole area, its walls and internal structure will also be proofed for safety and accessibility to pedestrians made easier. Not unlike in Partistagno, the small church entitled to the “Vergine del Rosario” (Virgin of the Rosary) will be reopened to visits and devotion, too.

Castello MottaThe third exhibition space will be dedicated to noble testimonies from the Motta Castle and the exhibitive path will continue in the higher Attimis, lower Attimis and Della Motta Castle areas. Here, the remains are the castle vestiges themselves. The intervention foresees protection of the wall remains, clean-up and safety-proofing of the whole area and paths, installation of equipment in an archelogical context.

VillaAt last, the Infopoint and Antiquarium.
Such a structure was set up in the Povoletto Villa and is expected to be a point of coordination for the whole integrated system, a welcome point for the tourists visiting the Park, an orientation one for amateurs and scholars looking for the exhibition spaces, offering information on the contents of scientific and learning programs. The Infopoint is also going to be crucial, when it comes to promotion programming, logistic and administrative monitoring of the Park activities.
