REFOSCO OF FAEDIS

Refosco di FaedisRefosco has been mentioned since ancient times as a wine of great renown. In all the banquets, of which we have historical certainty, among the wines of Friuli, Refosco was always there, along with the famous Picolit and Ramandolo. Its past history is notable, someone  identified it with the Pucinum of Timavo of which the empress Livia, wife of Augustus, arrived at the age of 82 years of good health had declared herself a debtor.

The Romans also called it “Racimulus fuscus”, hence the name of Refosco. Certainly in June of 1409 in Cividale, in a famous 72-dish feast in honor of Pope Gregory XII, Refosco was there and worthily represented by its variety from Albana di Prepotto.

Over the centuries, there were further reports of banquets, in which Refosco was present, such as in the 1762 detailed chronicle by Domenico Onagro, in which the great reception given to the noble guests at the Military Games was reported.

More information can also be found in treaties such as the 1747 Lodovico Bertoli one and in the "Family Letters" by Antonio Zanon, written between 1763 and 1765.

Essential and important moments in the history and study of the Refosco were:

  • The commission established by the Friulian Agrarian Studies in 1863 studied and  explored more than 700 essays and 300 varieties of grapes in the districts of Cervignano, Cividale, Codroipo, Gemona, Gradisca, Latisana, Palma, Pordenone, Sacile, San Daniele, San Vito, Spilimbergo, Tarcento and Udine. They identified six different types of "Rifosc”
  • The Austrian Wine Congress, held in Gorizia 16 to 20 September 1891, in which the difference between Refosco (both red and green petiole varieties) and Terrano from Istria was established.
  • “The Ampelographic Atlas” by Dr. Guido Poggi, 1939, showed and described wine varieties grown in Friuli. It included three Refosco ones, coming complete with comprehensive descriptions and illustrations of bunches, buds and shoots.

These were followed in more recent years by other important studies that developed and explained the refosco varieties in detail, demonstrating once more their deep relationship with Friuli.

Thanks to this important and detailed history, it can be said without a doubt that the  Refosco di Faedis variety is indigenous. This, and the renewed interest in the varieties of this kind brought together the volunteers from the Association of Winegrowers of Refosco di Faedis. They want the virtues of Refosco to emerge, especially the Colli Orientali del Friuli varieties from the territories of Faedis, Attimis, Torreano Nimis and especially exhalting the best of them all: the Refosco di Faedis.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINE

Refosco di Faedis glassRefosco di Faedis, served in a large glass, has an intense ruby red colour with evident violet reflections that tend to garnet with ageing. Rich extracts ensure good consistency.

The bouquet ranges from floral sensations (violets and dog rose) to fruity hints (dewberry and wild fruit); the original and absolutely typical tone is in any case enhanced by evident minerals, accompanied by hints of undergrowth, wet leaves and slats of old chestnut barrels.

Dry, rather warm and sapid to the taste, it exalts sensations of freshness and evident tannins that set it among wines by no means excessively balanced but nevertheless an ideal accompaniment with food.
Moderate ageing attenuates acid and tannin components to release hints of wild spices and coffee.
